Eligibility Requirements

• Be at least 18 years old
• Be a green card holder for at least 5 years (3 if married to a U.S. citizen)
• Have continuous residence in the U.S.
• Be physically present in the U.S. for at least 30 months of the past 5 years
• Be able to read, write, and speak basic English
• Pass the civics test (128 questions)
• Be a person of good moral character

The 7 Steps

1. Check eligibility using the USCIS eligibility calculator
2. File Form N-400 (Application for Naturalization) — $760 filing fee
3. Get biometrics taken at a USCIS Application Support Center
4. Attend the interview at your local USCIS office
5. Pass the English test (reading, writing, speaking)
6. Pass the civics test (6 out of 10 questions correct)
7. Take the Oath of Allegiance at a naturalization ceremony

How to Prepare for the Civics Test

The civics test has 128 possible questions. During your interview, you’ll be asked 10 and must get 6 right. The best way to prepare is to practice all 128 questions repeatedly.
