How to Pass the Citizenship Test on Your First Try
Proven study tips and strategies for 2026.
The Test Format
You’ll be asked 10 questions out of 128 possible. You need 6 correct to pass. The officer stops asking once you get 6 right.
5 Study Strategies That Work
- Start 3 months early — Don’t cram. Spread your study over weeks.
- Study 10 questions per day — Cover all 128 in about 2 weeks, then repeat.
- Use flashcards — Write the question on one side, answer on the other.
- Take practice tests — Simulate the real test conditions.
- Study in your language first — Understand the concept, then learn it in English.
The Hardest Questions
Most people struggle with:
- Questions about current officials (President, VP, Speaker, Governor, Senators)
- The Federalist Papers authors
- Constitutional amendments (13th, 14th, 15th, 19th)
- Cabinet positions
Tip: Check current officials right before your interview — these change!
What If You Fail?
You get a second chance. USCIS will schedule a re-test within 60-90 days. You’ll only be re-tested on the section you failed (civics, English, or both).
