US Citizenship Interview: What to Expect (2026 Step-by-Step Guide)

The naturalization interview is the final major step before you become a U.S. citizen. Knowing exactly what happens removes most of the stress. Here is the full walkthrough, in order.

1. Check-in and the oath to tell the truth

You arrive at the USCIS field office, check in, and wait to be called by an officer. Before any questions, the officer asks you to raise your right hand and swear to tell the truth.

2. Review of your N-400 application

The officer goes through your Form N-400 with you, confirming your answers about travel, employment, residence, and the “good moral character” questions. Answer honestly — consistency with your application matters.

3. The English test (speaking, reading, writing)

  • Speaking is assessed throughout the interview by how you answer the officer.
  • Reading: you read one of up to three sentences correctly.
  • Writing: you write one of up to three sentences correctly.

4. The civics test

The officer asks civics questions out loud from the official list. You answer verbally — you must answer enough correctly to pass. Once you pass, the officer stops asking.

5. The decision

Many applicants are told the result the same day: Granted, Continued (more documents or a retest needed), or Denied. If granted, you will be scheduled for the Oath of Allegiance ceremony.

Tips to pass on the first try

  • Practice answering civics questions out loud, not just reading them.
  • Re-read your own N-400 the night before.
  • Bring your green card, state ID, and appointment notice.
  • Arrive early and dress neatly.
