What “practice test” means on this site
Our practice tests are built to match the real 2025 USCIS civics test as closely as possible. Each quiz pulls 20 questions at random from the official list of 128, shows one question at a time, and stops when you reach 12 correct answers or 9 incorrect answers, exactly as the officer would. The questions and acceptable answers are the official USCIS ones; we do not add trick questions or questions that are not on the test.
How to use each tool
- 20-question quiz: your main practice tool. Take it once a day. When you can pass three days in a row with 12 correct in 15 questions or fewer, you are ready.
- Study all 128: the full list with answers, organized by topic. Read it once at the start, then use it to look up anything you miss.
- Flashcards: for the 20 or 30 questions that keep giving you trouble.
- Timed exam simulation: adds a clock to build the habit of answering within a few seconds.
- Mock interview: combines the N-400 review questions, the English sentences, and the civics questions in one run, the way the real interview flows.
- Reading and writing practice: the official USCIS vocabulary lists in sentence form.
Multiple choice versus the real interview
Our quiz offers answer choices so you can learn quickly, but the real test is oral: the officer asks and you answer from memory with no choices shown. That is why the flashcards and mock interview matter. In your final week, cover the answer choices with your hand or switch to the mock interview, and say every answer out loud before checking it.
What the practice test cannot do
A practice test cannot check the questions that depend on where you live or on current events: your Governor, your U.S. Senators, your U.S. Representative, and the current President, Vice President, Speaker of the House, and Chief Justice. Look those up separately in the week before your interview. It also cannot evaluate your spoken English; for that, practice answering the N-400 questions out loud with a friend or family member.
Is this an official USCIS test?
No. USCIS does not offer an online test that counts toward your application; the only civics test that matters is the one the officer gives at your interview. USCIS does publish the official question list and free study materials on its website, and every question on this site comes from that list. This site is independent and is not affiliated with USCIS or any government agency.
